More long term thinking ...... the basis for successful corrosion control:

"What we need are leaders who have the guts to say to us: "Our infrastructure is crumbling ... and you might as well get used to the idea that it's going to cost a lot of money.""
Linwood Barclay's column in the Toronto Star, August 16, 2003, p.A25.

The Rebuild America Coalition's fact sheet on the threat of corrosion to infrastructure emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring, in one of the four key elements for any successful corrosion control effort. The key elements identified were:

  1. Budgeting for long-term maintenance needs.

  2. Qualified personnel, trained in corrosion control.

  3. Scientifically sound, proven corrosion control technology.

  4. Continuous monitoring and maintenance of structures affected by corrosion or at risk to corrosion damage.

If corrosion monitoring is implemented at a very early stage, it can provide vital information for other elements such as minimizing budget pressures (by providing early warning before serious damage sets in), proving suitable corrosion control methodologies and optimizing maintenance schedules and activities.
