Remote Corrosion Monitoring System for Gas Distribution System:

An automated corrosion monitoring system used by Centra Gas Manitoba (Canada) in its distribution system has been described in the Pipeline & Gas Industry publication, October 2001 edition.

System Features:

  • Measurement of corrosion protection potentials and end-pressure.

  • Communication with remote monitoring units via telephone line (cell phone compatibility has not been ruled out for the future).

  • Increased measurement frequency over manual readings.

  • Focus on cost effectiveness and simplicity.

  • Measurement accuracy at least similar to manual readings.

  • Remote monitoring units read and store data, call in to central host computer at a prescribed time to upload information.

  • Customized system developed.

  • Further improvements, refinements expected with time.

Benefits:
  • Trend identification in corrosion protection levels.

  • Identification and correction of problems such as "shorts", depleted anodes in shorter time frames.

  • Cost reduction in readings.

  • Early warning of future upgrade / maintenance requirements.

  • Improved scheduling, reduction in unplanned work and system outages.

  • Anticipated overall improved system safety and integrity in the longer term, as more data and information is generated.
