The concepts of attaining pipeline integrity and maintaining pipeline integrity have been described by Van Oostendorp*. The role of various corrosion monitoring techniques, for both internal and external degradation, in maintaining pipeline integrity is illustrated in the diagram below. The importance of feeding back knowledge gained from corrosion monitoring to the design and construction phases is also shown.
