Monitoring in a very unlikely, remote Location - Mawson's Huts in the Australian
Antarctic: Corrosion monitoring activities have reportedly
been underway (out of the general public eye, one suspects) in a uniquely
remote and hostile building location, the historic site of Mawson's Huts* in the
Australian Antarctic Territory. Think (and shudder) ... the cold and wind when exposed
around latitude 67º South ...
The monitoring equipment is used in an effort to better
understand the deterioration processes affecting the historic buildings and artifacts,
dating back to the historic Antarctic expedition led by Sir Douglas Mawson in 1912.
Variables monitored include temperature, humidity, steel corrosion and salt deposition.
Reportedly, these measurements have exposed, "as a myth", that biodeterioration
and corrosion are insignificant under these deep-freeze condition (while noting that
insect and fungal damage is retarded). (Editor's notes: a) who can blame the insects and
b) corrosion monitoring programs have a tendency to expose myths
and fantasies.)
